DGLA Embraces the Future

by Pete

Dear Friends:

I spoke with William Waybourn; former DGLA President and community activist.

He stated that “…but what can’t be counted is the “victory” inside the minds of so many who believed in his race and the changes it will bring. You should remind Ed Oakley that Harvey Milk lost five times before he won in San Francisco. There is no shame in losing this one.”

That is the silver lining in this election. It was truly historic to have GLBT activists; progressive Republicans; Democrats and people from all over the country involved in this campaign. I firmly believe Dallas is a better city because Oakley decided to run for Mayor. I know that future generations will stand on his shoulders to achieve victory.

As a community we will have to address the gay baiting and bigotry that dominated the last few weeks. Intolerance reared its ugly head in a big way during the election. Dallas is a can do city that will heal and move forward.

The Dallas Gay & Lesbian Alliance will continue its 30 year history of assisting with that transformation and healing. As we celebrate our anniversary we need to reflect on the wisdom of our forefathers. It is time to roll up our sleeves and work together with the Mayor Elect Leppert and incoming council members to ensure our rights and protections. Together we can accomplish great things!

Best regards,

Pete Webb
